Nelle Woodruff was born and grew-up in Rome, Georgia. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Georgia prior to embarking upon a twenty-five year career as an educator in Alabama. In 2002 Nelle moved to Charleston, South Carolina, to enjoy the historic city and its cultural community. Pursuing her enthusiasm for the arts, Nelle soon became the Projects Associate at the College of Charleston School of the Arts and held that position until 2014.
During her time at the College, Nelle began to explore a long-time interest in creating jewelry and began to operate under the name Dragonfly of Charleston. From her parents and grandparents Nelle learned to appreciate the beauty, quality and value of things that have come down through the generations. Reflecting this appreciation for the past, Nelle incorporates a variety of vintage items into her “A Vintage Element” line of jewelry.
As Nelle pursued her passion for making jewelry, she began to exhibit her work in the Charleston area. In 2017 Nelle submitted her work for consideration in a two-stage jury process and was admitted to the South Carolina Artisans Center, which is the “Official South Carolina Folk Art and Craft Center.” Its primary mission is to “showcase and market the handcrafted work of our state’s leading artists, while ensuring that art inspired by tradition is protected and nurtured.”
Nelle’s work is available for purchase at Karen’s Korner in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; Studio Open in Folly Beach, South Carolina; the South Carolina Artisans Center in Walterboro, South Carolina; and online at dragonflyofcharleston.com.
